The Brightest Star in Orion Constellation, Rigel!

Source: astropixle.com

Hello, Twiskies. I'm back with another interesting information about astronomy. Now we're gonna discuss some facts about Rigel, the brightest star in Orion constellation. A little funfact, Rigel is my most favorite star, Twiskies!

Okay let's start our journey to Rigel, Twiskies! Rigel is a blue supergiant star in the constellation Orion. The Bayer designation is β Orionis, Latinized to Beta Orionis and shortened as Beta Ori or β Ori. Rigel is the brightest and most massive component, as well as the eponym, of a stellar system including at least four stars that appear to the naked eye as a single blue-white point of light. This system is located roughly 860 light-years (260 pc) from the Sun.

1.  Rigel vs Our Sun

Rigel is the brightest star in the constellation Orion. Rigel's brightness is equivalent to 40,000 times the brightness of the sun! Rigel also has a much larger diameter than the sun, which is about 78 times larger than the diameter of the sun's layers and emits about 120.000 times more energy  than the sun. Rigel's star's total radiation output can be up to 66,000 times more than that of the sun due to its massive size. With more light and a far larger size than the sun. Rigel sounds so cool and scary at the same time, right, Twiskies?

2. Rigel Distance to Our Earth

Twiskies, Rigel-a blue super giant star, is about 850 light years away from Earth. In other words, the light from Rigel's star seen in the night sky was emitted 850 years ago. The light from Rigel's star today is thought to have been emitted around 250 years ago before Colombus discovered the edge of the North American continent.

3. Mythology and History of Rigel

And Here's the short mythology of Rigel. In Scandinavian legend, Rigel represented the giant Orwandil's big toe. According to folklore, the god Thor severed the giant's other big toe, which had become frostbite. Thor flung the toe into the northern sky, where it created Alcor, a star in the Big Dipper constellation. The name Rigel is taken from the Arabic meaning “the left foot [of Orion].” Rigel’s modern name was first used in 1521. If you interested and want me to make another post that only discussing about Rigel's myth, just let me know! I would like to make it for you, Twiskies.

That's all the information that I could provide to you, Twiskies. If you want to know more information about Rigel, just ask me on the comment!

Cya, Twiskies!
